Lip Colors That Make Teeth Look Whiter

I'm Dr. Laleh Mehrrafiee, DDS, a cosmetic dentist trained at USC. For fifteen years, I've worked a few inches from people's smiles, and I've seen how much the shade beside them changes the way they look. The fix is simpler than most people think.

When someone asks me for a lipstick that makes teeth look whiter, I don't start with their skin. I start with their smile.

Which lip colors make teeth look whiter?

Shades with a cool, blue-based undertone make teeth look whiter. Blue-based berries, cool pinks, cool rose-nudes, and cherry reds all do it. Warm shades built on yellow or orange can do the opposite and make teeth look more yellow than they are.

Why the shade beside your teeth matters

Your eye never reads a color on its own. It reads it against whatever sits next to it, and your lip color sits right beside your teeth.

Natural teeth have a little warmth in them. Next to a warm, yellow-based shade, your eye picks up the yellow in both. Next to a cool, blue-based shade, the cool undertone offsets that warmth, so your teeth read cleaner and your smile reads brighter.

Same lips, same light, one change: the shade.

The shades I reach for

  • Blue-based berry: the most reliable brightener.
  • Cool rose-nude: natural, with rose in the base, not beige.
  • Cool pink or mauve: soft and easy for every day.
  • Cherry red: a red that leans blue, never orange.

The shades that can dull a smile

  • Orange-reds and corals: the orange sits right beside your teeth.
  • Peach and yellow-beige nudes: they echo the warmth in your teeth.

None of these are wrong. Wear what you love. When you want your smile to look its brightest, reach for a cool undertone.

If you've been told you're warm-toned

Many people learn to avoid cool shades because their skin is warm. Your complexion and your smile are two different questions. A neutral-to-cool shade can flatter your lips and complement your teeth at the same time.

Every smile, every tooth tone

If you've ever searched for the best lipstick for yellow teeth, you're far from alone. Natural teeth aren't meant to be paper white, and there's nothing to fix. The right shade simply lets your smile look its brightest.

The same goes for whitened teeth and veneers. Both are part of my practice, and the shade works the same way whether you've had them or not.

Does lip gloss make teeth look whiter?

The shade decides it, not the finish. A cool-toned gloss works the same way a lipstick does, with more shine. A matte liner underneath keeps the color crisp at the edge.

How I built this into LALE

This idea became The Complex Calibration, a method centered on the natural shade of your smile. Traditional cosmetics are formulated around the undertones of your skin. Every LALE shade is calibrated to complement your teeth, so your smile looks visibly brighter.

Where I'd start:

Luxe Gloss in Guilty Pleasure on lips

Luxe Gloss in Guilty Pleasure, the brightening shade. A rich, blue-based berry. The cool undertone offsets warmth, so your whole smile looks visibly brighter.

Shop Guilty Pleasure · $28

Luxe Gloss in Iced Out, the statement shade. A cool, icy rose-nude with a frosted shine that catches the light. The one people notice first.

Shop Iced Out · $28

Always On Matte Lip Liner in Hot Gossip follows the same method. Line, fill, or wear it under your gloss.

Shop Always On · $22

Your lips frame your smile. Choose the shade for both.
